Former President Jimmy Carter was seated alongside a gathering of present and past political figures, who came together to pay tribute to his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter.
On the 28th of November, the 99-year-old arrived at the ceremony, his legs covered by a blanket adorned with a carefully stitched photograph of him and his late wife.
The blanket bore the inscription “The Carters,” along with the name of their shared birthplace and lifelong home, Plains, Georgia. Rosalynn Carter passed away on November 19th at the age of 96.
The 39th president was captured on cameras sitting in the front row during the service. He was accompanied by President Joe Biden, first lady Dr. Jill Biden, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former first ladies Michelle Obama and Melania Trump.
In attendance were Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff, as well as other notable political figures such as former first lady Laura Bush. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and musicians Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks provided entertainment. Additionally, numerous family members and close friends shared fond memories and kind words about the “steel magnolia.” Notable political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff, as well as former first lady Laura Bush, were present at the event. Moreover, several close friends and family members shared cherished memories and kind words about the “steel magnolia.”
During the service, Amy Carter, the only daughter of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter, delivered an emotional speech. She expressed that her mother had spent most of her life loving her father and their partnership and love story had been a significant aspect of her life. Amy also shared a letter written by her father, Jimmy Carter, to her late mother, Rosalynn, 75 years ago when he was serving in the U.S. Navy, as he was unable to express his love for her himself. Amy Carter is currently 56 years old.
In his letter, Jimmy Carter expressed his joy every time he was reunited with his wife after being apart. He even said that every time he saw her, he fell in love with her all over again. Their grandson, Jason Carter, shared that his grandmother once told him about the time she danced with her husband all night long. He added that her life was like a sermon. The couple was married for 77 years and had four children together. They spent their final days in hospice care at their home. Rosalynn Carter entered hospice care two days before her death, while Jimmy Carter has been receiving hospice care since February. President Carter released a statement after her death, saying that Rosalynn was his equal partner in everything he ever accomplished and that he always knew somebody loved and supported him as long as she was in the world. A private funeral service will be held on Nov. 29 in Plains, where the former first lady will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Carter home, which is also part of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park.
